Co-Owners of Howlin’ Books, Gwil Owen and Jessica Kimbrough have been friends for over 20 years. Gwil has been dealing in rare and unusual books for 15 years. Jessica has worked with small businesses in accounting for many years.  So when bookstores in Nashville started closing at a rapid rate, Gwil and Jessica discussed opening their own store.

Gwil, being an Academy-Award nominated songwriter and Jessica, being married to a Nashville rocker as well as being Grimey’s long time accountant, they naturally felt like a bookstore heavily stocked with books about music and musicians made perfect sense. Then Gwil unearthed a portrait of Howlin’ Wolf he found at a yard sale and Howlin’ Books was born.

The next decision was where would Howlin’ Books live? Then Grimey’s New and Preloved Music, Nashville’s premier Independent record store decided it was time to expand, perhaps by adding a second store two doors down from Grimey’s on 8th Ave South.  And the great news was there was room for Howlin’ Books!

Sharing both a physical space and a passion for tangible media with Grimey’s Too, Howlin’ Books keeps a carefully curated selection of new and used books specializing in music, arts, pop culture, modern literature, poetry, and children’s books. Howlin’ is all about the in-person experience, hosting everything from author signings to in-store performances by local and national musical acts in the shared space.

Now with Frothy Monkey Coffee house also sharing space, customers can grab a drink from Frothy Monkey’s coffee bar and spend an afternoon in the store browsing books and preloved music! Customers can also sit on our beautiful deck and read from a new book or have lunch from Frothy Monkey.  It is all… GREAT ON 8TH!
